I Hate My Job - How Do I Stay Motivated? Part One
by Molly Luffy
Uh oh. It’s spreading faster than I thought. The “I hate my job” disease is circling the world faster than Captain Kirk’s Enterprise.
In the past 3 days I’ve received multiple emails from Wiz-dom subscribers who are just at their wits end with their jobs. Take Jake for example. Jake’s company has been through multiple re-orgs and layoffs in the last two years. The stress of constant job in-security combined with the fact that Jake is bored with his job responsibilities has left him feeling super-unmotivated. In fact – it’s so bad that Jake has started surfing the web at work, – just to beat the boredom. And you know that web surfing at work is a certifiable career killer.
So are there any strategies that will help Jake and all of the other Jakes out there who are totally unmotivated? The answer is YES! With one little caveat: The Jakes must really want to make things better for themselves.
You see, no person or strategy can motivate the un-motivatable. But even the simplest, most common sense approach can do wonders for the motivation level of those who really want to change.
So for all you Jakes out there who want to make things better for yourselves, let’s get going on the Wiz’s 3-step strategy for giving your motivation and attitude a swift kick in the butt. You’ll be glad you did!
Step One:
Realize it’s your choice to be unmotivated and hate your job – or not. True, you might have a less than glamorous position right now. But is it really all that bad? Think about all of the jobs you could be doing that are much, much worse than yours. Ever heard about the whistling trash man? There’s this guy who is a trash man. Not a very glamorous or desirable job, right? Well this guy manages to enjoy his job. In fact, he enjoys it so much that he’s gained a reputation for it. Customers on his trash route love him! They make a point to go out and talk to him because his wonderful attitude is infectious. Hard to believe, right? Well, it is a true story!
