Surviving Your First Day at Work

Surviving Your First Day at Work

Fresh graduates or school leavers who are starting their first job would have 1001 questions in mind - What if I say the wrong things to the wrong person at the wrong time? What if my shoe straps break while I'm walking? What if nobody talks to me? - and a lot more "What if"s.

Getting the Job Offer

You've aced the interview and out of the shortlisted few, you have been hired. Upon accepting your first job offer, you are now taking your first step into the employment world. In preparation for your first day at work, you should have the following check list:

Decide On Your Attire For The First Week
You should plan which attire to wear to work for the first week. Keep your attire as conservative as possible to avoid silly mistakes. You do not want to stand out like a sore thumb among your new colleagues.

Refrain from making any fashion statements until you have observed and decided on the accepted dress code in the workplace.

A fresh grad on his first job actually wore torn jeans and a round-collared T-shirt on his first day at work as he was told that the corporate attire is "smart casual". He misconstrued the term "smart casual" and thought that smart attire meant a shirt that is not wrinkled. He received many frowns on his first day at work and had to explain himself to his superior on his attire. He learnt the hard way that dressing up is a vital part of personal appearance at work.

Call Up to Ask
If you have doubts on the dress code or if the HR department requires you to bring any additional documents or anything at all on your first day at work, just call up and ask. That way, you can calm down your nerves, knowing that you have everything in place and have not missed out anything. Do not think that your HR department will feel that you are just being troublesome by asking many questions. By asking, you are showing that you are really serious in that job and you are more likely to make a good impression that way.
