University in Wales open to Filipino students
Unusual? Yes! We are going to start off this month’s column with a lesson in pronouncing Welsh place names!
The first one is: GLYNDŴR. This is pronounced like a Chinaman trying to say Green Doors! i.e. Glindoor.
The second one is: CLWYD. This is pronounced like a Sherlock Holmes tip + yourself! i.e. Clue Id!
Glyndŵr University is found in the county of Clwyd in the town of Wrexham in Wales. This is one of the UK’s undiscovered jewels, as I discovered last week when I was invited to go there by the Vice-Chancellor. Granted University status six years ago, but a thriving Polytechnic since WWII, Glyndŵr University has everything that Philippine students considering studies in the UK want: a wide range of degrees at Bachelor’s, Master’s and Ph.D. level, on-campus accommodation, a job placement office for part-time jobs and full-time employment after graduation, a location that is less than an hour’s drive from either Liverpool or Manchester airport, ten minutes drive from the historic city of Chester and a cost that is genuinely affordable.
I know you will look ahead to check out the cost and then come back to this section, but let me show you the departments that have multiple degree programs on offer:

Of particular interest are the Aeronautical Engineering degrees as the wings for Airbus are made just down the road from the university and engineering students frequently do their internships with Airbus and have great employment opportunities with them after graduation. Sport Science is another interesting course and BASKETBALL SCHOLARSHIPS are being given to students who have been regional, national or international experience under their belt.
However, the exciting thing about Glyndŵr is the fact that the Vice-Chancellor has an international vision for the university and wants to bring in students from all over the world, including the Philippines. After discussions, the pricing for Philippine is incredibly good value because not only is there a reduction in tuition fees, but also the on-campus accommodation (single room) is provided for the year at no cost. See the table below for the fees, but in round figures, under Php500,000.00 for the whole year inclusive of accommodation. Then remember that students are allowed to work up to 20 hours per week during term time and 40 hours per week during holidays and minimum wage is £5.77/hour – and it’s nearly possible to cover the cost of your education. See table:

Don’t think that lower fees mean lower academic standards – they don’t. They simply reflect the vice-chancellor’s determination to put Glyndŵr on the international student map. Classes start last week of September 2010 and applications for Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees can still be processed. If this answers your desire for a degree from an great overseas university and money has always been the problem, this is answer. Give International Education Specialists an email on intl_edu_specialists@pldtdsl.net or call819-1001 or text 0918-904-1282 and set up an appointment for a free information session about Glyndŵr University. If possible bring your transcript with you to know if you can be accepted for entry at any level : Foundation (Philippine High School graduate) ; 1st year or credit transfer entry (Philippine college credit transfer) ; or graduate entry (with Philippine College degree).
